Tuesday 25th November
1 or 2 Short-eared Owls were up at Bogside Racecourse; 5 Whoopers (inc 3 juvs), 6 Gadwall (inc 2 drakes), and 319 Teal were on the upper estuary; another drake Gadwall was on the Garnock Floods with 104 Teal.
Scattered among Irvine Bay's five towns of Ardrossan, Saltcoats, Stevenston, Kilwinning, and Irvine are many interesting wildlife sites. There is a large estuary, extensive sand dunes, 12 miles of coastline, overgrown Brownfield land, scattered woodland, a string of freshwater wetlands, heath, carr, raised bog...lot's of interesting habitats to visit. A great deal of important habitat in the area has been lost in the recent past and the rate of habitat loss is increasing. Thought I might as well create a blog about the area's wildlife before it's all gone!
