Sunday 14th December
7 Whoopers and 18 Linnets were on a stubble field at Kerelaw. 9 Mallards were in the pool there. 7 Yellowhammers were in a hedgerow near the stubble field at Auchenkist Farm, as was a single Tree Sparrow - the first one I've ever seen in the area.
Scattered among Irvine Bay's five towns of Ardrossan, Saltcoats, Stevenston, Kilwinning, and Irvine are many interesting wildlife sites. There is a large estuary, extensive sand dunes, 12 miles of coastline, overgrown Brownfield land, scattered woodland, a string of freshwater wetlands, heath, carr, raised bog...lot's of interesting habitats to visit. A great deal of important habitat in the area has been lost in the recent past and the rate of habitat loss is increasing. Thought I might as well create a blog about the area's wildlife before it's all gone!
