Thursday 18th September
2 Pintail and 3 Gadwall were on the upper estuary. One Gadwall drake is back in full breeding plumage and another is almost there. A couple of Curlew Sandpipers were with 20 or so Dunlin at Bogside. 276 Wigeon were counted. (Photo: 2 Pintail)
Scattered among Irvine Bay's five towns of Ardrossan, Saltcoats, Stevenston, Kilwinning, and Irvine are many interesting wildlife sites. There is a large estuary, extensive sand dunes, 12 miles of coastline, overgrown Brownfield land, scattered woodland, a string of freshwater wetlands, heath, carr, raised bog...lot's of interesting habitats to visit. A great deal of important habitat in the area has been lost in the recent past and the rate of habitat loss is increasing. Thought I might as well create a blog about the area's wildlife before it's all gone!
