12 Snipe and a Common Sandpiper were at the River Irvine. 3 Knot and a Great Crested Grebe were the most interesting birds at Bogside. The upper estuary was the most interesting section of the site with 16 Snipe, 27 Dunlin, 110 Wigeon, and a Pintail. (Photo: Grey Heron)
Scattered among Irvine Bay's five towns of Ardrossan, Saltcoats, Stevenston, Kilwinning, and Irvine are many interesting wildlife sites. There is a large estuary, extensive sand dunes, 12 miles of coastline, overgrown Brownfield land, scattered woodland, a string of freshwater wetlands, heath, carr, raised bog...lot's of interesting habitats to visit. A great deal of important habitat in the area has been lost in the recent past and the rate of habitat loss is increasing. Thought I might as well create a blog about the area's wildlife before it's all gone!
